Wilmar Vegetable Oil Refinery Plant
Tema Greater Accra Ghana
Client: Wilmar Africa
Contract Sum: $5M
This entire development which is on a 14 acre land overlooking the Tema Port started in 2011 and was completed in 2013. Dartwood Construction was involved in the design and construction of all internal concrete roads and drains, Transformer and generator building, Bleaching Earth building, Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Biomass & Boiler building and the Packing plant. The Packing plant alone has a footprint of 136m x 60m.

TRANSFORMER & GENERATOR BUILDING: This is a reinforced concrete framed single storey building complete with flat concrete roof. It consists of the MCC room, Transformer room, MV room, Synchronisation room, toilets and a large concrete apron externally which houses the power generators. There is an extensive network of underground cable trenches of varying depths which had to be carefully worked out with the process Electrical engineer.

BLEACHING EARTH WAREHOUSE: This is a reinforced concrete framed single storey building with steel roof trusses and longspan aluminium roofing sheet covering. It has a large warehouse space (18m x 24m), Technical store, Chemical store, Workshops, Locker room and Toilets. Externally, there is a 3 meter wide concrete apron all around the building.

EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT (ETP): This is a steel framed building with steel roof trusses and longspan aluminium sheet wall cladding and roof covering. It consists of a Laboratory, MCC room, Blower room, Dosing Chemical area, Filter press area and RO plant.

BIOMASS & BOILER BUILDING: This is a 30m span steel portal frame structure with steel roof trusses and longspan aluminium sheet wall cladding and roof covering. The building is 20m high with a mezzanine floor office. It is a complex building with extensive networks of pits (Boiler pits, Blowdown pits, Ash pits) and plinths, all with lots of equipment holding down bolts. There is a sludge retention pond and a 30m high chimney supported on a reinforced concrete base with 32No holding down bolts arranged in a circle. Setting out was done using Total station with localised coordinates. All structural steel members were fabricated in China.

PACKING PLANT: This building is the largest in this project. It is 136m x 60m steel portal frame structure with steel roof trusses and longspan aluminium sheet wall cladding and roof covering. Monitor roof lights forms part of the design and for this reason the roof sheeting is a composite insulated member to compensate for the direct sun effect. The steel mezzanine floor was designed to support a number of heavy machinery. The Packing plant houses the Plant office, Packed products storage, Bottle filling line, Resin store, Jerry can crushing room, Air compressor area, and Crushing rooms. Setting out was done using Total station with localised coordinates. All structural steel members were fabricated in China.
